The Coils

The condensing coil is in the outdoor part of the unit and runs the refrigerant at high pressure. This intensifies the heat it absorbs, so it can transfer it to the air outside.

Both of these coils have two primary issues. They can become clogged with dirt, dust and other contaminants, preventing air from flowing through them. They can also get damaged and leak refrigerant, causing the system to lose the needed pressure to operate efficiently.

The Fans

Near both coils are fans that draw air in and force it through the coils. Then, the air is pushed back outside. If either of these fans malfunctions, you will likely experience less air flowing from the vents in your home. You may also hear noises such as rattling, screeching, humming, or buzzing from the fans.

The Compressor

The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant as it goes into the condensing coil. This pressure allows it to more effectively transfer heat from the refrigerant to the outside air. If the compressor fails, you will notice warmer air or possibly reduced airflow from your vents.

A failing compressor may or may not make sounds as it fails. If it does, you will likely hear a growling, screeching, or rattling sound. You may also notice your air conditioning circuit breaker tripping.
